Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis

What is Piriformis Syndrome ?

Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle, located in the buttocks, spasms or tightens, irritating the sciatic nerve beneath it. Symptoms include buttock pain, sciatica-like leg pain, and difficulty sitting or walking.

Causes

Overuse (e.g., running or climbing), prolonged sitting, trauma, or poor posture can tighten the piriformis. Anatomical variations, where the sciatic nerve runs through the muscle, may predispose individuals to this condition.

Massage Therapy Solutions

Massage focuses on relaxing the piriformis and surrounding muscles. Deep tissue techniques loosen the muscle, while myofascial release reduces fascial restrictions. Trigger point therapy targets tender spots in the piriformis and glutes. Stretching the muscle during massage, paired with hip-opening techniques, improves flexibility and reduces nerve compression. Heat therapy may enhance relaxation. Consistent sessions, alongside strengthening exercises for the glutes and core, can prevent re-tightening and promote long-term relief.
